HOW TO SPOT ADDICTION - Recognizing signs of addiction is not always easy, because there are different patterns of abuse.  Some people are "binge" users: they get into trouble by drinking excessive amounts of alcohol or use other drugs as an escape from their personal reality.  Binge addicts may only use on the weekends or a couple of days a week.  Others are described as "maintenance" users: they use alcohol or other drugs regularly — often every day — to feel "normal."  Although people use and abuse drugs in different ways, one thing is certain — becoming addicted guarantees that the disease, and its many problems, will progress.

Understanding the root cause of the addiction that is disrupting your life is vitally important.  Addictions must be understood from a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual prospective.  I know that giving up the addiction(s) that you have been living with for so long isn't going to be that easy.  But how and where do you begin?  You begin with making the decision that you want to change and that you need help.  Then find someone, a pastor, priest, counselor, clinical social worker or close friend that will support you in your new decision. 

Develop a support network of positive peers that will be there for you, especially during those times when temptation calls you back to that old unrelenting habit.  But above all, don't give up.  If you fall down in your attempt, just get up, forgive yourself and keep trying.  It's OK.  We are all only human, we all make mistakes.  Remember the 11th Commandment, thou shall not quit.  Just don't give up!

• Physically - What can you do to improve your nutritional health and feel more physically fit?  Do you eat with a nutritional purpose?  Have you given up the things that hurt you physically like alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, sexual addiction or what ever is keeping you from living a fuller life.
• Mentally - What negative self talk do you continue to replay in your mind that keeps you tied to poor decisions and bad behaviors.
• Emotionally - What are some of the things that you feel powerless against?  Is it a food that you believe makes you feel better when you eat it, is it an emotional attachment to someone you love who isn't good to you or for you? 
• Spiritually - A spiritual void can show itself in many forms in ones life.  Is it a lack of God centered love for yourself and other?  Have you forgiven yourself for being human and making mistakes?  Most importantly have you forgiven others to free yourself from the pain of your past and present experiences?  Because the forgiveness is for you, not just for the person you are forgiving.
